Health Testing

At Calliope Poodles we make every effort to produce the healthiest possible poodles by taking advantage of all available testing.

You may contact a breeder, be it in the newspaper, or on the web, and ask if they do health testing. Many will tell you their lines “don’t have any problems” or “their hips are fine”. Run, as fast as you can, to a reputable breeder whose priority is to do the testing and provide documentation to back it up.

Standard Poodles should be tested for von Willebrands disease, Sebaceous Adenitis, hip dysplasia, Atrial Septal Defect, Neonatal Encephalopathy, CERF’d for eye disorders and thyroid.

Miniature Poodles should be tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy(PRA), a genetic disorder and  patellas(knees) tested for luxation.  Hips may also be tested.

Toy Poodles should be tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy(PRA) and have their patellas(knees) tested for luxation.

Please visit www.poodleclubofamerica.org for complete information on health testing in all sizes of poodles.

This is very expensive testing. That’s why well bred dogs are seemingly more expensive than many puppies you will encounter. You will never regret purchasing a well bred poodle.
